The Perfect Home
In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. John 14:2 (NIV)When I first left my home country to be a missionary, I presumed I would be able to adjust to “homesick” attacks, for I had experienced those many times after my parents moved 1,000 miles north during my university freshman year. I still remember those moments of depression and heartache, of having my support system available only by phone. But no one ever told me about experiencing “country sick." So it came as a surprise to me at how often I yearned to be in my home country while overseas.
My patriotic celebration memories included marching bands blasting out national songs, flag-decorated hats and shirts dominating the fashion style, and fireworks filling the night skies. When those holidays happened while living overseas, our family of six would often drive by our country’s embassy just for the thrill of seeing our flag blowing in the breeze. Somehow, that drive-by-the-flag experience made us feel closer to home and those we loved and missed.
Our scripture tells us someday we that love Jesus will have a new home in heaven. It's going to be in a noisy neighborhood, with caroling choirs and trumpet serenades praising God for all eternity. Our love for God and obedience to His will guarantees our residence permits; our passports wait, ready to be stamped upon our death. What a great day that will be.
Dear Jesus, Help us to live a life that glorifies and pleases God, so that we may live in that perfect heavenly home you have prepared for us. Amen.
