Your Light

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Mathew 5:16 (KJV)

These words I read in my Bible and heard daily from my grandmother, yet I really did not understand them. How could I, a child, let my light shine? I lived with my family, going to church every Sunday. I went to school, played and laughed just like every other child I knew.

My sister was a child who was born with many physical problems leaving her disabled. The other children did not understand so they made fun of her, teasing and laughing at her for being different with challenges they did not have.

One day as my sister and I sat talking I asked her, “Why don’t you get angry at those rude kids. Doesn’t what they say hurt your feelings?"

She answered, “No my feelings don’t get hurt and I am not angry with them. You see, I know who and what I am. I am a child of God. With Jesus as my savior and friend, no one can hurt me. But I do feel sorry for those children and I pray someday they will learn to love Jesus as I do. Then they won’t do the things they do.”

Later that night as I lay in my bed I thought about my sister and what she had said to me. I thought about the words “Let your light so shine before men, that others may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Dear Father, help me to shine my light so that others may see and glorify you. And please bless those around me who have their lights shining brightly. Amen.
