No Expiration Date

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 (NASB)

When I picked up the phone I had no idea that my life would be forever changed by that call. My mom was on the other end. Through tears she told me my sister had passed away suddenly during the night. I could not believe what I was hearing. Pain pierced my heart and I fell to my knees to ask Jesus' help for what I knew would be a tough road ahead.

On the day of the funeral Mom asked me to speak to the family. I cried out to the Lord to give me the words to say. He reminded me of Romans 8:38-39 and He helped me to see in my mind a picture of His precious Son hanging on a cross, dying for me so I could someday live forever with Him. I knew my family needed to know that even though God's ways did not seem to make sense, He still loved us. In His strength I approached the podium and as I looked at my hurting relatives I knew they needed to know God had not abandoned them. I shared Romans 8:38-39 and assured my family that not even death can separate us from His love for us.

Time has passed and I know my sister is with Jesus, but there is still pain in my heart. I am reminded, however, that no matter what happens in life I am never outside of God's love. On an old rugged cross God Incarnate proved His love by suffering and dying for me. It comforts me to know that His love is unchanging and has no expiration date.

Father, please help us to remember how much you did to prove your love for us. When we hurt, you hurt and you take account of all of our tears. Help us to remember that no pain, suffering or even death can separate us from your love. Amen.
