The Poor in Spirit

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3

I think back to those days in school when the teacher would promise the students punishment for wrong deeds. I also remember the sigh of relief when the teacher said: I am not talking about everyone. The people I am speaking of know who they are. The Beatitudes are somewhat similar. In reading them, you must understand that they are not speaking to everyone. Rather, they are speaking to those who identify themselves as believers. In verse three, Jesus speaks of those who are poor in spirit. Who are they? It may be people who struggle from time to time with their faith. It may be someone that finds themselves down for any number of reasons. It might be someone who has just started down the road of religion, and hasn’t had time to bank belief and start to grow. It may just describe someone who just happens to have a day that they are poor in spirit. Do any of them sound like you? Here is the good news! Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is yours. You have a wonderful m ansion with your name on it that no one can take away from you. The beauty is that, even though you are poor in spirit, your faith is enough (regardless of how rich or poor) to get you into heaven. You are saved! You are in the family of God, and Jesus refers to you as: BLESSED!! You are blessed!!!

Heavenly Father, I know that sometimes I am not who you want me to be. I know that sometimes I allow carnal things to make me poor in spirit. I thank you for looking beyond those days, and blessing me far beyond what I ever thought I would have. I pray that you would continue to help me to grow, and to prop me up when I am down. In Jesus' name: AMEN.
