Cookies and Lent

He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine. Matthew 26:39 (NLT)

Yesterday I desired something sweet and noticed some Girl Scout cookies on the refrigerator. I started thinking to myself; if I could quit sacrificing sweets for Lent then I could pour myself a glass of cold milk, dip each one of those in it and savor the flavor of each cookie.

Then I thought of what Christ might have been thinking while he was prostrate before God begging to have the cup removed from him; If I don’t go to the cross, I could allow them to make me king. Yeah, I would rule fairly, but firmly. I could teach the people how to really love each other. I could really make this a better place!

Certainly the rationalizations of the King of Kings can be justified! But he knew his Father had a different plan.

His humanness didn’t want to go to the cross. But Jesus did go through with it. Because he did, everyone has a chance to live in peace even while going through chaos. Because he was willing to sacrifice, we have the hope of eternity.

Those cookies don’t seem that important now.

Lord, thank you for loving us through our temptations. You know what it is like. Amen.
