Follow My Lead

Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord; point out the right road for me to follow. Psalm 25:4 (NLT)

My husband of 23 years recently died. Struggling to know what to do next, the Holy Spirit whispered, “Follow my lead.” The picture of a man and woman preparing to dance came to mind. The man gestured to the woman to come to him. At first, the woman hesitated, as if this was their first dance. The calm yet firm look in his eyes helped her overcome her fears.

The music played a soft melody with a slow tempo. He took her hand. She noticed his strength. He began to move. Awkwardly at first, she attempted to follow. How many times she stepped on his feet! Little by little she began to ebb and flow with his movements.

She realized the music did not always follow the tempo of his movement. In fact, she had to stay focused on the specific next move of his feet, hands and facial expression. His strong hands helped her confidence until she felt they were as one body, flowing across the floor in perfect harmony.

Can we follow you Lord in such unified rhythm? The answer was clear. Jesus Himself followed the Holy Spirit with such ease; it was as if He was dancing like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers, gracefully, effortlessly, but more importantly as one.

Help me to follow Your lead, O Lord, in this dance called life, leaning on Your guidance - not my own. Let me listen to Your music, the rhythm, tempo and direction. That I may discover how to walk in perfect unity as You prayed, “that they may be one, as we are....” (John 17:22 NLT) - Amen.
