He Carries Them Close to His Heart

"He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young."  Isaiah 40:11 (NIV)

As I picked up my tiny, nine-week-old baby late one night, he suddenly went limp in my arms. Horrified, I placed my hand on his chest. He was not breathing! I called my husband in from the living room. He desperately attempted CPR, but neither a movement nor a sound came from my child. I begged my baby, Neill, to breathe; I pleaded with God not to let him die, but I kept having the shocking vision of an empty crib! Little Neill’s eyes were closed, and his mouth was clamped shut, like a limpet clinging to a rock. I panicked; I cried; I prayed, “Lord, please don’t take my precious baby away.”

Finally I managed to pry his mouth open with my fingers and coax him to nurse, if only very weakly. But at least he was breathing. I had got my baby back! We rushed him to the hospital, but the doctors were baffled since by this time the baby was wide awake and smiling.

Later that night, I drew the bassinet very close to my bed and kept my hand on my little one until morning. But I need not have worried. God’s hands are much stronger than mine, and He carried my little "lamb" through that dreadful night – and every day and night since then.

Today that "baby" is 26 years old and perfectly strong and healthy, but I still thank God for his life everyday.

Dear Father, thank You that it is when we are at our lowest that You seem to speak loudest to show us Your Omnipotence.

Thought for the Day
Sometimes God allows us to almost lose one of our most treasured blessings so that we will call on Him out of the pit and realize just how powerful He is.
