Simple Blessings

He maketh me to lie down… Psalm 23:2 (KJV)

I lay in bed after an extraordinarily hectic day at the office. I was completely exhausted and there was only one thing my body craved: rest. That night, willing my tired muscles to relax, the words from Psalm 23 washed over me: “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.” He maketh me to lie down. I pondered those words for awhile, and thought about the specialness of this gift. Isn’t it interesting that no human being sleeps while standing up? True, we might lean against a wall or a desk for a quick respite, but not for the deep sleep that revives and re-energizes. To lie down. It is a special gift that we take for granted. Our Creator Father could have ordained that we seek our rest while perching precariously on a branch like a bird, or hanging upside down like a bat, or floating in suspended animation in the middle of a stream. But no, He orders us to rest at the end of the workday, and He makes us (not just permits us) to lie down, to rest.

Finally, as relaxation entered my body, the words of a Christian songwriter came to mind:
“Strength enough for the day, sweet rest when it’s through,
Isn’t it wonderful, the Father loves you”.

What a special gift it is that our Father has given us.

Father, thank you for giving us the strength to accomplish the tasks set before us. And thank you that at the end of the day you cause us to lie down in sweet rest. Amen.
