Looking to the East

This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 (NKJV)

Waiting and watching for the sunrise is one of my first activities of each day. How welcome is the morning light, peeling away the blackness of the sky, providing a breathtaking backdrop for the chorus of chirping birds outside my window, singing praises to God.

It takes a while before my morning voice worships the Creator. Preoccupied with daily duties or painful physical problems, I sometimes miss out on praise prior to finding fault with someone or something (quite often myself). Such days lack the positive boost that would make for a great day.

I’m reminded of the way my maternal grandmother greeted us every morning. She exclaimed enthusiastically, “This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it." Her exclamation was followed by a cheery smile, making her day and my day for each of the 25 years she lived with our family. Always rejoicing, she often spent the day making delicious homemade bread to give away to friends and neighbors.

God speaks through His Word and people, providing the encouragement to comprehend that the Sustainer of life is waiting for me to respond to Him. I imagine that He is waiting in the East, as it were, for the final trumpet call when we will praise Him with everlasting joy.

Thank You, Lord, for giving me another day to rejoice and be glad. May I fill this day with praise. Amen.
