Watch Your Step!

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

Our friends Floyd and Darlene invited my husband Bruce and me to vacation with them in the Smoky Mountains. We rented a cabin in a beautiful, plush forest. The fresh country air, intermingled with the aroma of distant campfires, welcomed us.

One evening, shortly after dark, Bruce was walking to our cabin. He didn’t use his flashlight because the stars were shining and he didn’t feel the need for additional light. As he approached the porch he saw the shadow of an animal perched on the bottom step a couple of feet ahead. Bruce stood still for five minutes until the animal crept off. He thought it might be a raccoon. After the animal had wandered a distance away, Bruce flipped on his flashlight to discover that he had narrowly missed stepping on a skunk!

As we navigate through life, isn’t it wonderful to have God’s Word to light our path? No matter what is happening in our lives, we can find answers which offer us hope and encouragement. The Bible is our guide, helping us through the confusion found in this world. It gives us strengthened faith and wisdom as we use what He has provided for us.

But many times, we Christians take God’s Word for granted and neglect to use it. Perhaps there are times we think we don’t need it because everything is going well in our lives. And how many of us get too busy and allow our Bibles to collect dust? God will shine His light on our path continuously, if we will only receive it. As we start today afresh, He will speak to us through His Word.

Heavenly Father, please help me to appreciate the treasure of Your Word. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
