What's in Your Heart?

This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. Matthew 15:8 (KJV)

As a young man, my biggest fear, when it came to the fairer sex, was that they would make a fool out of me. They would say nice things to me, and all the while, their heart would be scheming on how they could take advantage of me, hurt my feelings, and embarrass me. It has made me very leery of people who say flowery things. I watch what they do to see if their actions align themselves with their words.

Have you ever given any thought about your relationship with God? What about our relationships with each other? Does God really want you to fill Him up with nice words? Do you think that God pays more attention to what you say or what you feel and do?

In the scripture listed, Jesus confessed and addressed His concern with the people of His day. Their words were nice. They could quote the Bible frontward and backward. They knew the Mosaic Law, knew all the commandments, knew about every comma, every period, every semi-colon. But their hearts were not there! In their hearts were desires to do away with Him. In their hearts were their desires to be considered great! In their hearts were all the evil planning, evil thinking, and evil doings. In their hearts!

God wants your heart! He wants to know that your relationship with Him isn’t about empty words, false praise, catch thoughts. He wants to know that your love for Him is genuine, and real. He wants to see a true desire to do the right things, in your heart. You see, you and I will make mistakes. We will sometimes say things that we wished we never did. We will feel guilty for being too hard on someone. But in our hearts, in our hearts will (should) still reside a genuine desire to do the right things.

No catchy phrases! No profound thoughts! No wonderful anecdotes to last you a lifetime. Give God your heart!

Heavenly Father, I am thankful for the opportunity to call on your name. I pray that you would help me to devote my heart to you. I pray that you will draw me nearer to you day by day in Christian love. I pray that you give me a sincere desire to be the best person that I can be. I pray that you would bless me richly with a Godly love that is felt by every person I come in contact with. In Jesus' name, Amen.
