John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

This is not the Hokey Pokey!

Learn John 3:16 with your heart and your mind and your soul. It’s message is simple and
it is perhaps the most recognizable and oft quoted of Bible passages. What is the message? If you Believe in Jesus Christ you will attain the kingdom of God.That’s what it’s all about!

The apostle John writes of a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a highly respected master rabbi who, at night, comes to see Jesus. He knows that Jesus is a teacher sent from God for, as he says to Him (John 3:2) “...no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with him.” This is a simple declarative sentence yet Jesus answers what He anticipates will be Nicodemus’ question. (John 3:3) “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God..”

Nicodemus is confronted with a dichotomy of what he knows and what he doesn’t yet know. He is a teacher who teaches earthly things yet will not consider the heavenly things Jesus speaks of. He knows the popular teachings but not Jesus’ teachings. He knows the water but not the spirit. He knows birth but not re-birth. He knows earth but not Heaven.

From Verse 3 to Verse 15 we see Jesus overwhelm Nicodemus with seven allegories about, and at least one metaphor, of heaven. He adds many references and a couple directives about how one should be born again. His speech to Nicodemus builds dramatically and culminates, in verse 16, in the most beautiful, concise and effective statement of our Christianity.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

So, the next time you see someone holding up the John 3:16 sign at a football game, remember that Nicodemus, a good and curious man, through his questioning, came to know that Jesus was God!
