“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)
A friend once asked, “If there’s really a God, why is there pain and suffering? Why would He let bad things happen to you Christians?”
I was stumped by his question because I’ve never equated the Christian life as being exempt from worldly trials.
I know that God created a world governed by laws of nature to protect our physical bodies. Likewise, I know that He created spiritual laws to protect our souls and guide our free will. When we violate those laws, we are outside of God’s intended purpose and can be harmed.
Believers are not immune to the illnesses and hurts of a fallen world. Trials will occur but we can take solace in the fact that God loves us and has a plan for our lives.
I’m no less a Christian because of the pain and suffering that I’ve experienced in my life. I’m no doubt stronger for it. I believe that our sufferings can be used to highlight a need for God and His plan of salvation for us.
Lord, help us understand that our life is not our own. Let our sufferings be a testimony to Your grace and mercy revealed through Jesus Christ, that through him we have eternal salvation.
