Learning from the Everlasting Arms

Psalm 119: 71 "It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees."

It's easy to replace the phrase "leaning on" with "learning from" in the old hymn: "What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms; what a blessedness, what a peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms."

All of our leaning on Jesus is only part of our soul growth. Yes, the Christian life is about leaning on Him and trusting Him for everything. He wants us to do that. But there are people who cannot move beyond the circumstances in their lives. They are stuck. They cry out for the Lord's help. They pray for His comfort, long for His healing, and nothing changes. The cycle repeats, repeats, and repeats. Could it be that they are leaning but not learning?

Do I trust God to change my circumstances? Absolutely! Can He do that with miraculous intervention? Unequivocally!

However, most times He wants to teach me so I will learn, understand and move forward.

In spite of the trials and tribulations of King David and the fact that he totally trusted in the Lord, we find him in Psalm 119 requesting over and over that the Lord would teach him, and that he would learn and understand.

Some would argue that leaning is harder than learning - blind faith so to speak. But learning is much more difficult. The mind must be engaged. It requires mental, emotional and physical energy. Learning requires examining old ways and embracing new. Learning reinforces our leaning.

Next time you are in a situation where you seem stuck, lean into the Lord. Trust that He will provide a way out. But,at the same time follow His lesson plans as He begins to teach you. Learn and understand the things about your circumstances and yourself that need to change and then embrace the homework.

Lord, as I find myself struggling to survive help me remember to lean on Your Everlasting Arms for comfort and support. Help me open my ears and heart to the lessons you have for me. Thank you, Lord. Amen!
