Adopted

Ephesians 1:4-5 (The Message)
“Long before He laid earth’s foundations, He had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of His love... Long, long ago He decided to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ.

I have a granddaughter! I imagine some of you are already smiling; you know the excitement of having a grandchild. This child came to our family through the process of fostering and adoption. Our son and his wife adopted a thirteen year old foster child. The family gathered for the final court date to celebrate; what a day! So much love to offer her.
What I noticed in this sweet child was a bit of hesitancy. She embraced the love of our family, but also seemed a bit unsure about it. Could this be a love she could trust; a love that would not give up on her as her birth parents had?
She needs time to grow into the love we offer her. She cannot possibly receive it all in one day.
This is an image of us as believers. When I made the decision to accept God into my life at nine years old I could not even begin to imagine how much love there was for me in that choice. I am still growing into the fullness of God’s love for me. And as I open my heart to receive more of God’s love, my love for others and for myself grows as well.

Loving God, open the hearts of all your adopted children so that we may receive the love you have for us and live into its fullness. Amen.
