Do not work for the food that spoils; instead work for the food that lasts for eternal life. John 6:27a.

"Come with me," I called. "I have something to show you." I couldn't wait to share with my husband the thrill of seeing the first tomato of the year in our garden. After weeks of weeding, fertilizing, watering, it was a joy to experience the fruit of our labor.

As a gardener, reading Jesus' parable in Matthew 13:1-9, I can't help but imagine how our Lord must rejoice when seed falls on good soil and a new soul is won for the Kingdom.

Gardening is not easy. There are new weeds every day. A proper balance of sun and rain is a rare thing. In the same way, growing the Kingdom is not easy, but what rejoicing there must be in Heaven as the new fruit of the Kingdom arrives.

Dear Lord, help us ever to do your will. May we be faithful workers in your Kingdom, bringing souls to you. In Christ's name. Amen.
