I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness. John 8:12b
My family history tells the story of my great-uncle who, at age fourteen, was sent to work for a neighboring farmer. His parents were homesteaders and the land was still open prairie. Late on Friday nights, if he wanted to spend the weekend with his family he had to walk home. Roads and fences were yet to be built, so his sense of direction could only be found in the stars and the moon. If there was cloud cover, he would have to lie down on the open prairie and sleep until daylight when he could get a sense of direction. How frightening, I thought, for such a young boy.
Most of us will most likely never have to cross an open prairie at night, but there is much darkness in our world even today that can be very frightening. Jesus tells us in John 8:12, however, that He is the light of the world. If we keep our eyes on Him, we will not stumble around in darkness. My great-uncle relied on the light from above to find his way home through the darkness. And we, in spite of the darkness all around us, will find our way home if we keep our eyes on the Light of the world.
God of light, illumine our path. Dispel the darkness with your pure light. Amen.
