Prince of Peace

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. I give to you not as the world gives. Don't be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 (CEB)

My husband was facing open heart surgery. Again. We were in the surgery ready for him to go back, but an emergency had delayed his procedure. Due to the delay, I started thinking. Many of my friends had asked, “How can you be so calm? They are opening up his chest!” or “Aren’t you nervous? I surely would be.”

Perhaps I wasn’t taking this seriously enough. Was I being naïve? This really was a big surgery with certain risks involved. Maybe I needed to be more realistic. What if he left me a widow? My peace was leaving me as I focused on my fears. I looked over at my husband on the gurney who looked quite calm. Smiling, he said, “Honey, it is all in God’s hands. He knows exactly how this will turn out. He has a plan for me and I’m good with it.”

My husband, the patient, was ministering to me. Ironic, how with a simple choice, I could lose focus of God who gave me peace to focus on my circumstances instead.

Jesus said He gives us peace. Sometimes it is easy to lose focus of that as we go about our daily activities. But we have the Prince of Peace. We can focus on peace instead of fear. As in my case, sometimes it takes a little reminder from someone close to us.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we praise you for your gift of peace. We praise you also for those that nudge us back to focusing on that gift of peace.
