Model of the Faith

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 (NIV)

There was something else I needed to tell them.

After dinner we helped our kids with homework. My wife and I also included time to talk to them about school and their friends. They had a chance to ask us a few questions, too. This was our way of identifying and tackling small problems in their lives before they bloomed into larger ones.

We often worried about their grades, their health, and especially their safety.

But God reminds us it is not only their earthly education and physical well-being we need to concern ourselves with. It also matters that we impart to our children an education in the things of God. Our objective as parents remain unchanged from days gone by. Bring the children to Jesus and ensure they arrive at the place of our heavenly Father.

God wants us to instruct our children about His Son and to clear a way for them to encounter the real Jesus. He warns us to take care not to impede our kids’ path with our own bad example and calls us to be loving models of the faith.

But we are not expected to do it alone. With the direction and grace from our heavenly Father, we have the help we need to help our children grow in love for Jesus. As models of the faith, we need to walk with our kids on their faith journey with Christ until they are ready to walk with Jesus on their own.

Joyful indeed will be the day when our Lord Jesus Christ welcomes our children to walk with Him and they follow.

Lord, help me to become the best teacher of the faith for my children. Let my actions and words help them grow in the faith. Amen.
